The VTCT Level 2 Functional Skills Qualification in English helps learners develop the practical English skills needed for work, study and everyday life.
Learners will build confidence in reading, writing, speaking, listening and communication, applying these skills to real-world situations and workplace contexts. The course supports learners in developing clear communication, accurate written English and the ability to understand and respond to a range of texts and discussions.
Learners will also develop their understanding of audience, purpose, tone, structure, spelling, punctuation, grammar and how to communicate effectively in both formal and informal situations.
All courses require employment for a minimum duration of 16 hours per week.
There are no formal prerequisite qualifications required to undertake this qualification.
Learners should complete an initial assessment to confirm that Level 2 is the most appropriate level for them. The course is suitable for learners who need to achieve a recognised English qualification for an apprenticeship, employment, further study or personal development.
This is a flexible qualification delivered over a timetable suited to the learner’s starting point, confidence and assessment readiness.
On completion, learners can use this qualification to support progression into further study, employment or apprenticeship completion.
The qualification can also support progression into higher-level vocational training, teaching or assessor qualifications, and other courses where a recognised Level 2 English qualification is required.
Learners are assessed across three components: reading, writing, and speaking, listening and communicating.
Reading and writing are assessed through formal assessments, completed either on-screen or on paper depending on centre arrangements. Speaking, listening and communicating is assessed through practical spoken activities, where learners demonstrate clear communication, active listening and appropriate responses.
Learners must successfully achieve all required components to be awarded the full qualification.
At Westrow Academy, our courses are designed to give learners the skills, confidence and professional support they need to progress in the hairdressing industry. Training combines practical experience, expert guidance and structured learning, helping each learner develop at the right pace while building the knowledge and techniques required for their chosen qualification.
Depending on the course, learning may take place through a combination of salon-based training, Academy sessions, practical demonstrations, theory work, observations and ongoing reviews. This ensures learners can apply their skills in real working environments while receiving regular support from experienced educators.
